All The Things Between Us

Don't forget! That is, remember: Porter is playing
Second Stage on Saturday, July 21st, 2012 at 3:00pm.

Most of the time there isn't any rhyme or reason to
the order I'm posting these but in this case this
one goes along with the previous posted song. It
goes over the same ground as "Another Lonely Night".
Not much to relate with this one. It has a traditional
C&W style. I dunno - "It's just a song."

All of the Things Between Us

Aug 27 '11
F
I measured all the things between us
Bb
They didn't amount to much
F
Some plates and books and furniture
C
Photographs and such

F
My ring stayed on the bedside table.
Bb
It must've slipped my mind.
Gm7
Splitting up what's left of us,
C
Takes a toll over time.

Chorus:
F Bb
All of the things between us
Gm C
Always getting in the way.
We couldn't see what we once saw
                             C7
Goodbye to shared days

I measured all the things between us
They added up to a lot
Inches, feet and miles grew
Now distance is all we've got.

You kept the truck and filled it up
With half of our old life
I kept trying to get used to
Calling you my "ex" wife

Chorus

I measured all the things between us
They didn't amount to much
a broken heart, a broken promise
Abandoned by your touch

Memories of better times.
Fade into the past
All those people talking
They can all go kiss my ass.

Another Lonely Night

First things first: Porter is playing Second Stage on
Saturday, July 21st, 2012 at 3:00pm. Come out and see us.
Stick around for more great local acts that day. Friday too.

I specifically wrote this one for Porter. I mean, what's a
Country & Western band without songs about broken hearts
and divorce? It was loosely based on a friend of mine's
experience. Two things were pointed out to me when we tried
to make something out of it:

1) The words "Another lonely night" are sung with the exact
same notes/melody as Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the
Dark" when the Boss sings "I get up in the evening."

"I gettup in the eve-ning"
"Uh-nuther lonely nuh-ite"

It's exactly the same and it never even occurred to me
(and I've played "Dancing..." live with "Rebbie's Rebels.)
That's why it's important to get some outside ears to
constructively critique my stuff. I'm too close to it
to see the wide-angled view. Also, the first part of the
bridge is very close to The Cure's "Just Like Heaven"
And to come completely clean, I use two Neil Young lines
from two different songs in this one. See if you can
figure out which ones.

and 2) It was sorta missing something and we couldn't
figure out what it was. Admittedly we didn't try too hard -
It didn't make it past 2 jams. I still like playing it
acoustically in my living room so maybe I'll run it by the
band again one day but Jay has a new one he wants to try
and I've got about 5 new ones I wouldn't mind Porterizing.
There's only so much time devoted to learning new tunes at
rehearsal. See what you can do with it.

Another Lonely Night
June 11 '11
G Am Bm
Another lonely night
D Em Bm
Can't forget the good old days.
D Em Bm D
Can't forget about our old home.

Livin' hand to mouth
Facing life and what it brings.
          Em C G
It gets tough all by yourself.

           Em Bm
I got scared when the rooster
D
crowed.
                       Em Bm
And you got scarce when things moved
      Am
too slow.
                 Em Bm D
And it was rare to let your feelings go
               Em Bm G
And it was me who found you in the snow.

Another sleepless night
I don't feel enough to try.
I don't feel enough to set this right

Broken down life
Heading out to the bar
To sleep with another man's wife.

In between the days and nights
Head in hands in the twilight
All alone at the microphone
On that night we lost our home

Bridge
G D Am C
G D C Am
Gadd11

Another lonely night
Watching things fall apart
Watching life get covered up in dust.

Lost the will to fight
Settled in to this rut
Just thinking how I'm stuck.

I got scared when the rooster crowed.
And you got scarce when things moved too slow.
It was rare to let your feelings go.
And it was me who found you in the snow.

August Blue

© 2002 Fort Creek Songs

Here's a short one.  I was searching through my e-mail account for something else and this came up.  It's going way back to when as a young man, all I wrote were love songs.  It's a finger-style, jazzy type acoustic number that I wrote in an alternate tuning (which I did a lot of back then).  I'm not sure I remember how to play this one, so the chords won't be included above the lyrics as per usual.  I played this one with The Octoberists once or twice. I made up some parts that were too hard for me to play (I do that sometimes - in "Fads[The Way the Money Goes]" too) so it just sort of fell to the wayside.

Sunlight through windows is throwing diamonds on the floor
and my heart is peaceful with thoughts of your trip to the shore
your eyes wide open to scenes of this country so vast
your music is filled with the beauty of centuries past

august blue
gentle hue
leads me to
thoughts of you

streetlights through closed blinds are throwing straight lines on your face
and my heart is peaceful as we lie in this warm embrace
bodies lie close as if rose petals pressed in a book
feelings exchanged with the passing of one knowing look

august blue
gentle hue
leads me to
thoughts of you

In The City

© 2004 Fort Creek Songs

I'm back.  This one dates back from when I lived in Toronto.  It's in an alternate tuning and I can't actually remember how to play the whole song  but it's a neat little snapshot of where my head was at at the time.  I'm trying to shoehorn it into standard tuning and maybe present it to Porter.

At the intersection
Hanging in the sky
Woven by the streetcars
The electric spiderwebs, they keep me from floating away
In the city

The sidewalks here they all have birthdays
Stamped into their hardened face
They remind me of how long I've been here
And the failure of not leaving a trace
In the city

Chorus:
But oh oh oh
I hear it calling
From my hometown
Now I'm walking
In the city

The streetlights sing above me
And stapled to the pole
They whisper come and join us and we'll share with you our troubled souls
In the city

Chorus:
But oh oh oh
I hear it calling
From my hometown
And now I'm walking
In the city

The searchlights swing above me
And sweep across the sky
They're searching for the constellations
That I can never seem to find when I'm floating around
In the city

Chorus x 2:
But oh oh oh
Hear it calling
From my hometown
And now I'm walking
In the city
